What should you know about the process of getting a driving licence in Germany?

Those who want to drive in Germany must have a driving licence showing that they can drive. Although the driving licence of the Republic of Turkey is considered valid for stays of less than 6 months, you should remember that foreign driving licences lose their validity after 6 months.

People with a residence permit in Germany need a German driving licence to drive within the borders of the country. In this content, we will talk about all the details about the driving licence process in Germany.

How to get a driving licence in Germany?

There is almost no difference between the driving licence process in Germany and the process in Turkey. Here are the things that need to be done in order to get a driving licence in Germany:

1. Enrol in a driving school.

2. Attend a first aid course.

3. Have an eye examination.

4. Apply for a driving licence.

5. Attend the theoretical lessons organised by the driving school.

6. Take the theoretical exam.

7. If the theoretical exam is passed, driving lessons are attended.

8. Practical exam is taken.

9. Those who pass the practical exam are entitled to a driving licence.

Although the whole process is as we have summarised above, there are a few details you need to know:

  • The cost varies between 1500-2500 Euro: Depending on the city in which you live, the number of hours of lessons taken and the driving school chosen, a driving licence in Germany costs around 1500 to 2500 euros.
  • The duration of the theoretical training is 14 hours: The theoretical lessons in Germany last a total of 14 hours. At the end of these lessons you have to take a theory exam.
  • You can take the exam in Turkish: If you do not speak German and you have to take the written theoretical exam (Theorieprüfung), do not worry. Turkish is one of the exam languages and everyone is entitled to take the theoretical exam in Turkish.
  • Driving lessons last 12 hours: In Germany, driving lessons last 12 hours in total and can only be given by professional instructors. In order to take the practical test (Praktische Fahrprüfung), which lasts about 45 minutes, you must take these 12 hours of training.
  • You can take the test again: If you failed the driving test, you don’t have to worry. Those who fail the practical test can retake the test by paying a certain fee.

Documents Required to Obtain a Driving Licence

There are various documents you need to submit in order to get a driving licence in Germany. You should remember that you cannot start the driving licence process if your documents are missing.

  • 1 biometric photograph
  • Proof of payment of the application fee
  • Passport

Driving licence requirements in Germany

The requirements for obtaining a driving licence in Germany are as follows

  • You must be 17 years old (you can enrol in driving lessons from the age of 16)
  • To be resident in Germany for more than 6 months
  • German citizenship or a residence permit in Germany
  • To have an eye examination and prove that there is no impediment to obtaining a driving licence

If you meet all of the above conditions, there is no obstacle for you to get a driving licence in Germany. You can take the exam and get your driving licence. However, you should not forget that the process after getting a driving licence is also very important. In Germany, everyone living within its borders is expected to strictly adhere to the rules. Therefore, not obeying traffic rules may result in you losing your driving licence.

For two years after you get your driving licence, you will be a trainee driver. During this period of driving as a trainee driver, you must obey all traffic rules, as even the smallest mistakes can result in the loss of your driving licence.
